I know what you’re probably thinking, “Uh…summer skin care tips, a little late, huh? Au contraire, my friend, there’s more than a month left of the sun’s rays and high humidity to contend with. “Pumpkin Spice with Everything Season” will come soon enough, but for now summer is on until September 22. So, we can’t let our guard down when it comes to sun protection.
I visited Elise Lucas, a licensed esthetician and co-owner with fellow licensed esthetician, Jamie Plaia , of Esthetique Facial Spa in New Orleans to find why summertime skincare is essential.
Elise knows what’s she’s talking about, she’s in the business of making sure your skin doesn’t just look good on the surface, but skin-deep! Her facials and treatments are designed to help with problematic skin issues such as eczema, hyper-pigmentation, sunspots and wrinkles. Her tips will help anyone keep their face looking great this summer.
Elise says that in summertime our pores tend to fill up with oils faster because of the heat and humidity. She says that your pores are like little cups that sit on your face with oil on the bottom. Picture a cup of oil left on the counter – it attracts dirt and debris in the air and so do your pores. The dirt and debris that gets trapped in your pores can lead to breakouts.
Wear Sunscreen Daily
We know that we should wear sunscreen but why is it that so many of us don’t? Elise recommends using a sunscreen with a moisturizer. It’s an easy way to protect and moisturize in one-step. She says use products with at least a 30 SPF.
Wearing sunscreen daily became much easier for me once I found a sunscreen/moisturizer that I actually liked. I needed one that was fragrance -free, fast absorbing, and non-greasy. It’s worth it to keep searching until you find the one that’s right for you.
Cleanse Morning and Night
Cleansing is even more crucial in summer because our skin is more grimy and oiler. It’s important to thoroughly cleanse your face, especially before bedtime. As we age, our skin renews at a slower pace, but washing exfoliates your skin and speeds up renewal. Elise says that going to bed without removing your makeup ages your skin one extra day. I don’t know about you, but I don’t need to speed up the aging process!
Facials are Important
You may have the best intentions but there are certain things that you just can’t do by yourself, that why it’s best to have a facial by a licensed esthetician or dermatologist. Skincare professionals have access to equipment and products that we don’t and they customize facials for your skincare needs. Elise educates her clients on the best way to deal with their particular skin problems.
