I love tacos… who doesn’t love a food that has a day of its own? Longtime New Orleans’ restaurateur Shane Finkelstein of Nacho Mama’s likes them too and he’s organizing Top Taco New Orleans on the evening of March 23rd to see that tacos get their due. High time, if you ask me!
Finkelstein is inspired by Denver’s popular Top Taco festival and wants to bring the same energy and fun to New Orleans. He says to expect a great party featuring innovative tacos and cocktails. No limit…you can sample to your heart’s content! But wait; there’s more…live music, dancing, and interactive displays all along the river at Spanish Plaza.
He had no trouble getting restaurants like Juan’s Flying Burrito to hop on board. It helps that all proceeds go to One Heart Nola , a local charity helping foster kids.
Juan’s owner Jay Morris says, “The New Orleans restaurant business is tight, we do a lot of charity events, just going out and giving back. It’s great to participate in a fun party. That’s what all of us in the restaurant business do…. throw a party every night”.
Gourmet Taco Creations from Dozens of NOLA Restaurants
Local Mexican restaurant favorites Superior Grill, Del Fuego, Johnny Sanchez, Rum House will be there. And putting the gourmet in tacos will be restaurants you might not expect including Bourbon House, Jacques Imo’s, Patois, Brennan’s and Canal Street Bistro.
Juan’s Flying Burrito Executive Chef Leif Swift says a well-executed food idea is going to work on a taco. Juan’s creative taco will be a Banh Mi taco with chicken and pickled and fresh veggies – a tofu version is available for vegetarians. The traditional taco will be Juan’s popular Pork and Slaw…. shredded pork, cheese, spicy slaw and salsa fresca. Juan’s has been around for nearly two decades and has evolved into what they call the first Creole Taqueria.
Tequila and Cocktails Too!
Tacos and spirits go together like red beans and rice and great tequilas including Don Julia, Patron and Tres Generaciones will be showcased; in addition you can sample high-quality small-batch tequilas, some with smoky undertones and even hints of caramel. If tequila isn’t your thing, wine, beer, and other spirits are available.
Let the Competition Begin
Each restaurant is paired with a tequila and can compete in four categories:
- Top Creative Taco
- Top Traditional Taco
- Top Margarita
- Top Creative Cocktail
Partygoers will get four voting chips to select People’s Choice honors. Celebrity judges including Chefs Alon Shaya and Frank Brigsten, Liz Williams of SoFab, and award-wining mixologist Abigail Gullo, will select Judge’s Choice.
Finkelstein is excited that so many different types of tacos and tequila will be available in one evening. Get your tickets and event details here.
